DAY 1 (The first day in our fixed departure)

GROUP C- Meeting point Flores Airport Cafe at 11:15 a.m. sharp

You will fly over the impressive Maya Biosphere Reserve to El Mirador archaeological site. Your helicopter departs from the Flores airport at 11:45 a.m. and arrives into El Mirador at 12:15 p.m. You will go on a condensed guided walk through some of the main points of interest at the site with a local park guard. (OPTIONAL: You may also take a professional archaeological guide with you at an additional cost). The site has been the object of archaeological studies for the past 26 years, however, many people think it was just recently discovered by archaeologists in the middle of the Guatemalan jungle. The ancient name of El Mirador is not known, but Ox Te Tun or "The God's Place of Birth" may have been the name the Maya used, while the ruling dynasty's name that ruled over a vast State, known as Kan, is just beginning to be understood... El Mirador is one of the most ancient & also one of the largest Maya cities, with very large temples built in the triadic pattern, with a temple in the middle and two temples facing each other on the sides. You will get to see 2 such buildings, the El Tigre Pyramid, the second largest at El Mirador, 72 meters above ground level, & Los Monos Temple (the monkeys), about 400 meters south of El Tigre and about 48 meters tall. As the other main pyramids at El Mirador, Los Monos, is also a triadic complex... These are characteristic of the triadic Pre Classic Maya architecture, and represent the Three Hearth Stones (Ox Te Tun) or the Place of Birth of the Maya Gods... You will also visit Structure 313, recently restored, and Structure 34, where you will appreciate a magnificent frieze depicting a jaguar paw.

Your departure from the site will be at 2:15 p.m. back to Flores, where you will arrive at 2:45 p.m.
